Do you have one of those contacts... the kind you invite to join
Multiply and find that, oh, maybe they use the site a couple times
before drifting off and losing interest? Or maybe they haven't even
managed to register yet! But it's not your fault; you, as a Multiply
enthusiast, understand what's so great about Multiply... but you're
looking for that tipping point that gets your friends just as hooked as
you are?
Yeah, it happens to all of us, even those
of us who work here, believe it or not! But this anecdote from one of
our users is pretty heartening; it describes one thing that seems to
bring people together on Multiply: events!
In
June of 2005, Mike and I got married, and you and Jill attended the
wedding. Everyone was taking pictures. You told my brothers that you
would be posting your pictures on Multiply. I had not invited them to
join yet. I'm not sure why. Probably because they rarely checked their
email. Anyway, that was the turning point in my Multiply use. Once my
brothers joined, we all started posting and replying to each other's
posts... vacation pictures, stupid videos, pictures of Pokie the
one-eyed dog. We started inviting our cousins to join. I think it was
easier for them to become involved because my brothers and I were
already active.
Two of the friends that joined in
2004 didn't
become active until almost one year later. Elizabeth and Kristie and
their husbands came to visit for a long weekend. I took lots of
pictures and told them that I would post them on Multiply. Both of them
were much more active after that event.
I think the
best way to
get people to start using Multiply is to have some kind of shared
event... a wedding, a group trip, a family or class reunion, a big
party, etc. I know that multiply has much more to offer than photo
sharing, but I think that's probably the easiest way for people to
become involved. Once they are members, they will be exposed to the
other features. And, then they'll be hooked.... like
me!
We couldn't have said it better
ourselves. Anytime that people get together and photos are taken is a
great chance to share them on Multiply -- even with people who aren't
yet members, by choosing to have your album e-mailed to them. Once they
enjoy yours, perhaps they'll even share their
own!
Let's not limit this to photos, either --
plenty of digital cameras also shoot video, which can also be shared on
Multiply. And if you feel like writing about your experience on the big
day, you can always post it as a blog entry!
Are
there any upcoming special events you're planning on sharing on
Multiply?
This is a great story and very true. In the past, I used to host my own site that would simply keep the family up to date with various happenings. It was simply a pull site where people would come whenever they felt like it and gather the information at that point in time.
With the birth of our daughter, I wanted a site that I could protect her pictures from prying eyes, as well as allow people to interact with the photos and read about the various happenings in our family. I tried MySpace, but was quickly turned off by the pop up ads and the atmosphere of the site. I felt this was a place where others were coming to pick up other users and find "mates" (to keep it clean).
Multiply has really brought a whole new perspective on the social networking, not just with strangers, but with our families. Now my parents, in-laws, cousins, etc have signe d in (which by itself is a feat, as most of them are not computer saavy) and are able to receive emails with updates that they can simply click on.
They can also leave comments, which is a great way to communicate! Although Multiply doesn't offer anything out of the ordinary, it is the friendly atmosphere that has given Multiply my vote. I feel safe and secure when I post pictures of my baby girl and I don't receive several messages a day from web cam operators, such as what is received via MySpace.
i do the same thing myself. i have events, and i tell everyone to visit my page. when i got engaged, i told everyone to check out my multiply page for the engagement photos. i never email them. always tell them to visit my page. and thanks to that, ive managed to make a lot of my friends and families get involved with multiply =)
I hope Multiply to grow in such a way that someday, all people around the world have a Multiply ID as their first-web-first-check accounts. Any baby need her/his Multiply ID reserved by her/his name. Then I could imagine a day that all the people around the world only have one "point of contact", and it would be their uniqe Multiply WebSite and also other things started from there, such as Public E-Mails, Private E-Mails, Other WebSites, etc :)
on that note - how about adding a (fairly) simple feature for scheduling events on the calendar - if an event happens more than just once, (say, weekly or monthly or yearly like an anniversary or birthday, or whatever) the event will "remember" it however many times it's occurrence is - whether weekly, or monthly or yearly...
i can't express my joy knowing that i have a place to visit and proud to tell my friends where to find me.This time i am always eager to open to multiply because it has multiplied my friends and access. My success!

Oh, yes, yes, please.
And if we could have full calendering functionality -- oh, my. To be able actually to schedule group events ... that would be bliss, or as close as I'm ever likely to get.

Oh, you're SO right! I have this whole bunch of people I have invited, but they don't seem to respond (in spite of the r-e-p-e-a-t-e-d reminders). And there's this lot who joined and then don't care! I keep checking on them, and they still have only 1 contact - ME!!! I even took the trouble of calling some of them them up (sometimes even halfway across planet earth!) to urge them to join - and the almost universal answer is "yeah, yeah, yeah.....we will join!"......then.......silence........deathly silence. I have pretty much left no stones unturned and no tern unstoned. I have even tried posting pictures of events involving family and friends.........still nothing.......I am close to giving up!!!
