Blog EntryIroning Out the WrinklesSep 25, '07 2:03 PM
for everyone
If you usually read this blog, you're used to seeing posts about new features, upcoming features, an occasional link to a relevant news piece... those sorts of things. Here's something a little different: an editorial, of sorts, in which one of our guys responds to some of the recent press coverage of Multiply, adding his own special insight.

Ironing Out the Wrinkles: Multiply is for everyone
by Michael Gersh, VP of Sales and Marketing

As most of our users know, Multiply recently received an investment and that news led to some nice press coverage. Some of this coverage has attempted to categorize Multiply as a website for particular age groups. For example, in an article entitled New Social Sites Cater to People of a Certain Age the NY Times grouped us with a few sites that "look like Facebook - with wrinkles" and that we're seeking out "older Internet users."  Another example, which actually contradicts the first, comes from Venturebeat, who writes that Multiply is a "social network aimed at 30-somethings."

We’re certainly happy that these stories covered our funding announcement, but those categorizations are not accurate. Multiply does not target specific age groups at all. In fact, we try hard to make sure the site is age-neutral, as well as gender- and geography-neutral. You can see what I mean by simply comparing our home page to others. Below are portions of screen grabs taken a few days ago (9/19), from the home pages of two other "social networking" sites:

Just by looking at the images, you can instantly determine who these sites are targeting. These are extreme examples of age targeting, however there are other social networking sites that similarly present random head-shots of actual users on their home page, and this can have a similar result in determining who uses those sites. Regardless of whom the site’s features may appeal to, if its userbase grows unevenly (across age or demographic), the random headshots on the home-page will increasingly represent the majority groups, and, in turn, will attract more users from those majority groups while potentially turning off others.

Since Multiply isn't for any specific age group, you won’t see photos of users on our homepage, much less users with "wrinkles." Our message to potential users: when you use Multiply, you’ll only see people – and content – relevant to you based on your real-life relationships – and that is appealing to people of any age.

I understand that journalists want to be able to differentiate the products and companies they write about, but the best way to differentiate Multiply is by the goals it allows users to achieve, in comparison with other sites. For example, both Multiply and YouTube let registered users upload video. But Multiply does not have a page that lets unregistered users view the "Most Viewed" or "Top Rated" videos. And YouTube doesn't have a page that lets a user know when her brother's roommate added a reply to that brother’s video. So if  someone’s goal is to have his video viewed (and commented on) by as many strangers as possible in the whole world, YouTube is probably the way to go. If the goal is sharing and discussing with people you care about, check out Multiply.

Multiply wants to provide users with a powerful communications tool that offers advantages over other communication tools, such as e-mail. For instance, on Multiply you can share media such as photos and videos more elegantly than you can with e-mail. And Multiply lets you share with more of the people you care about - or who care about you. (With e-mail, my sister's friends would never see the pictures I post. With Multiply, and only Multiply, they will – with no extra effort on my part.)

I'm not suggesting that our product has equal appeal across age groups. Younger people, on average, are more comfortable doing things like transferring video from a camera to a web-site than older people are. Younger people are also more likely to want to search through as many random profiles as they can, making new "friends" on-line, and flirting the night away. Knowing that, it makes sense that our product is very appealing to people in their thirties. But that doesn't mean Multiply is meant for people in their thirties. We've got plenty of users younger and older than that, and in ten years, the site will still be useful for all our current users even though they'll be ten years older. The same can't be said for most other social networking sites.

To summarize, I'd like to share a reply added by a Multiply user to  a post on Techcrunch that encapsulates much of what I've just written very succinctly:

I’m not looking for a site that’s going to try to force someone else’s agenda for my age group on me. I want a social site that works and works well. I want a site that’s going to enable me to get my own content out to exactly the people I want it to go out to. And I only want to have to deal with content coming in that I’ve chosen to see. It’s not about the age of the users but the functionality of the site.

Very true. Multiply is a very useful tool to get in touch with people, even on the other side of the world. And most of the people I know who use multiply are aged 16 - 21. That is very far from 30-somethings. Cheers to Multiply.

true. and what is the point behind telling that multiply is an oldies network? (???) even some friendster users don't even know how to fix their age. (example: a girl is "86" years old based on her profile but her pictures obviously shows that she's not. i live here in the philippines and i know for a fact that there are indeed more 16-21 year olds than otherwise. and age doesn't matter, it's about sharing what we have to other people that are also here in multiply. nothing else matters. =) cheers!

Yeeah! I agree both of you!!
Almost my friend at multply indeed 16-20. Age's no matter what. It's about sharing!! Sharing their life, information, etc.

this is why i love multiply. the ability for me to share just about any files i have to people i have included in my network is important to me.

and also i also want to point out that there are times id only like to share some files with specific people in my network. when i make some files private, others who i have not included would not know that they were left out. it reduces possible conflict with fellow users in my opinion. like "i can see you made a blog, but i cant read it because you locked me out" blah blah blah, that kind of drama.

There's no contradiction between the articles, in fact the 30-somethings ARE already "older Internet users"! If you check orkut's statistics, you'll know that 76% of its users are less than 35 years old.

I am proud to say that I am already a grandma of 5 and yet I did not hesitate in becoming a member because I am too old for this... all I aim for is to connect to my family and friends safely and speedily... especially those who live abroad. Thank you, multiply!

I want a social site that works and works well. I want a site that’s going to enable me to get my own content out to exactly the people I want it to go out to.
I've been on Multiply for a few months and have found it works really well. I would probably be classed as a wrinkly in internet terms, being over 40... I use Multiply to communicate with friends and family, and my Multiply contacts are of very different age groups. I really don't see it as an issue.

I too want a site that would enable me to get my content out to exactly the people I choose, and so far this is still tricky - there have been invitations I've had to turn down because of the limited options for defining access rights to specific items on my page. So far Multiply enables me to define something as for family only, for friends only, for friends and family, etc. or for individuals. But what about these people that you just bump into on the internet and you'd like to try and get to know, you'd like to go past the stage of exchanging the odd private message or popping round to each other's page now and again, but you don't really want to share all your personal thoughts/photos with them; at the same time you don't really want to deny your real friends access to these things.

When I first saw the Online Buddy category I thought that's what it was about, but as far as I can see there's no option of defining access as for Friends but not for Online Buddies.

I would really love to see this changed.

Apart from that - great site! Keep up the good work!

Excellent editotial... but one more point that might be worth noting about how Multiply defies age or generation: Multiply is also great for crossing age groups--especially within families. A sampling of my own personal contacts list includes my infant and middle-school nieces, Generation 'Y' cousins off at their respective colleges, GenX siblings and cousins seeking their fortunes and having children in all corners of the world, empty-nest aunts, parents using their recent retirements to travel wherever Travelzoo has a deal... all the way up to our "Greatest Generation" grandparents. It's the core product of Multiply -- a base platform that is feature-rich, yet still easy for anyone to use -- that lets us all keep in touch and share life's ups and downs from our homes in New York, Florida, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, Germany, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Kansas, etc...

I think Multiply is the best social networking site there is. I've been using Multiply since April and it was my 14-yr. old niece who initiated me into joining it. I was a bit hesitant at first because of my age. I felt I was way too old for it. Then again, as I was trying to build up my page, I noticed that people way older that me are doing Multiply. Cool! At least, I don't feel so left out :) I like Multiply because it has an answer to every specific need and you can practically post anything - photos, blogs, music, etc. Most of all, it's not frivolous. You can't ask for anything more. Oh, and about the "30-something and above" age group. It's good news for advertisers, if you talk about market segmentation. These are the people who are more likely to click on their ads and purchase/subscribe to their products and services :)

Keep it up and more power, Multiply!

I definitely agree to that. I doubt that multiply is catering people on a specified category or age group. As far as my contacts are concerned, i have friends using multiply younger than 18 and i also have older than 40. It seems that people (young and/or old) just find multiply to be user-friendly, less complicated and a great site for hosting, posting and having keepsakes of memories, and at the same time, a network of people, profiles and interests. I tried several accounts on similar sites and I haven't find anything that works like multiply. No other site comes close. WE BELIEVE WE ARE THE BEST AND WE ARE ON THE BEST.

bravo, michael. not only do i want multiply to still be useful for me in 10 years, i want it to be available. i'm thrilled with this second round of funding and i'm rooting for an IPO. (i know, i know. SOX makes IPOs rather painful these days. but a debut in england or germany can remove the sting. if you're gobbled up by a megasite and they ruin the flavor of multiply, i'll be a constant thorn in their side. feel free to pass the threat along to anyone that wants to court you.)

I agree fully Leigh-Anne. I'm also one of the wrinkly ones, like you I did not join Multiply to meet people of any specific age group, I have contacts varying from 15 - 96 in many countries, but those that shared similar interests to my own.
Yes, it works, and I think it works very well in that as you say, it is possible to filter our various uploads to those to whom we consider should have access to it. I my case very little is available to the entire network, some is limited to individuals, some to contacts etc.

What´s the problem with wrinkles? Yes, I think that brazilians youngsters don´t like multiply, cause here we think, and usually, the youngs like to share chats, and , usually, they dont speak English very well. Besides, multiply is too slow for them. That´s why they prefer Orkut, to chat, to find friends.
I think you should change the search tool. It should be more alike Orkut´s. I like Multiply exactly cause of the wrinkles!

I totally agree! Multiply is very appealing to the thirtyish age bracket. The site allows you freely post what is quite okay to be viewed by the public and at the same screen and sort people you want to include in your list of contacts. The site could be used to cater for people who would want to connect with friends and relatives or could be also used for promoting products and services. Salute to MULTIPLY!!

I've been a Yahoo 360 user for the last 18 months and had really enjoyed the experience. There were many improvements I would have liked to have seen there, and then we were informed that 360 is to shut down in the new year.
I can't remember how I came here. I think it was just researching similar places to blog. Multiply seems to have everything a 360 blogger wanted and more. You may well have noticed a mass movement of folk from yahoo to here. This site works for people that do not care too much for the frivolous widgets provided on other social networking sites such as Facebook. OK, those have their place and I'll play around with that when I feel like it, but its the more serious journaling and responses/responding that I'm in to.

Another aspect that attracted me to Multiply is the aesthetic look of the pages. It comes over as very tidy. In fact, I'd say it has a Google feel to it. Kinda, "Blogspot" but with contacts! I mistakenly thought that you guys are a Google product and have been corrected on that point. I'm wondering if some of your developers are ex Google developers.

Two things that really need to be worked on:

1) The "Search" function is very lame in that it only brings up one user's page rather than a list of users. Try searching for "ariel" by Mulitply ID. You always get cHeW yEeN. aRieL from Singapore. And "squid" brings up another user from Singapore. "blast" brings up someone from the Philippines. That's not really helpful. What, does South East Asia have a monopoly on things?

2) It would be nice to be able to plunk down a user box that one could import, say, Soduku puzzles, a horoscope, some favorite text or list of items. Yahoo's (ahem) Mash has modules that are nice. Having the pre-scripted standard user-boxes doesn't make my site stand out above the rest.

Ah, yes... well... I guess I can't hide the fact that I am indeed 30 something {*carefully ignores the coughing and spluttering from the wings*}

I believe that the marketting approach of not seeking 'target audiences' is somewhat refreshing in an age where the 'VP in charge of Image and Spin' tends to rule the boardroom. I hope that it is a success - it certainly deserves to be as I don't think anyone appreciates being put in a little box. The trouble with being put in a pigeon hole is that you tend to be only fed pigeon food.

Hopefully, your approach will pay off and we can continue to enjoy our little playground.

Now would those inconsiderate young 'uns please cover up their undergarments and turn down those infernal i-pokes - some of us are trying to nap.

I agree. I'm not interested in spending time wading through and reading blogs, emails, or watching videos from a sea of teanagers. I "do life" within certain circles where people happen to be scattered across the US. My Multiply helps us stay connected.

There may be some corelation with age. Don't know. If 20 somthings are flooding YouTube and MySpace and the 30 plus crowd have not reason to watch teanage home videos, then Multiply may hit Generation X and computer literate Boomers.

As far as photography is concerned, there is no such thing as to the restrictions on the age group barrier for this rewarding hobby.. Young and old [17 - 70 years] can take up this hobby.

After my retirement, I was introduced to this powerful Multiply site. After a year of my setting up my own Multiply webpage to promote the art of photography, I discovered many young learner enthusiasts joined my site for the purpose of learning from critiques, sharing their views and exchanging their love for photo taking. In my case, I see no good reason to divide these enthusiasts into younger or older group as long as they have the same common interest.

Long Live Multiply! Keep up with the great works!

I was sooo upset when I found out 360 was closing . I did not want to go to Multiply or anywhere else for that matter. Butttttt I started using Multiply whining about it for about 2 weeks until suddenly it occured to me that I was starting to like Multiply better than 360 lol. You can do so much here and I am enjoying it more by the day. And I just turned 49 sooooo I know wrinkles lmao.Thankfully I see I am not alone and don't have to feel old and decrepit lmao hahahahhaha. Thanks Multiply!
