Blog EntryLeaving Soon: ActiveX photo uploaderOct 9, '07 1:19 PM
for everyone
We recently announced the upcoming Multiply Toolbar (among other recent 'coming soon's). Built into the toolbar will be a new photo uploader, a worthy addition to the current ones like the enhanced Java and basic HTML uploaders (not to mention posting via e-mail and our wide array of import options!). Users of Internet Explorer also have the ActiveX uploader to choose from... but not for much longer.

Yes, the ActiveX is going away, but don't mourn for it.

As much as there is to love about that ol' uploader, Multiply users will find that the one built into the toolbar offers just as many options as the ActiveX one. With this on the way and the Java uploader still available, chances are you won't even miss the ActiveX uploader.

People who use the ActiveX uploader can continue doing so for the time being, though it will eventually be removed. We just wanted to give you a bit of a heads-up so there are no surprises when it rides off into the sunset.

I am really shocked! Will the new one still work for me who have only Windows 98?? Java doesn't.
I won't go into the reasons why I can't upgrade, but can't you please leave me ONE uploader I can use?

A toolbar sounds a little bit more invasive than I would like. In fact, a lot more invasive. Will this toolbar work on a separate browser like maybe Opera? So I have to wear this toolbar around with me all of the time, throughout all of my daily surfing. So I have Multiply with me, always? I guess we could install it just before we post, and then immediately uninstall it. This really sucks.

Invasive, how so?

The ActiveX uploader only worked on Internet Explorer. So we lose one IE uploader, and gain a new one for IE and for Firefox.

Toolbar on Opera, no. The Java and basic HTML ones, as always, should still work there.

I Always problem to use acitveX with Internet Explorer, and so never mind if it's go a way.....Thanks

Well I have been using Java uploader. That is fine. But the idea of a toolbar that will be there all of the time keeping me in touch with Multiply while I am taking care of other business is pretty scary. I am highly suspicious of that. Multiply is already directly connected to the email account that is associated with my MP account. I know that if I just open up and email form without clicking anything, it shows that I have read the email here at Multiply. It also shows me as having logged in.....when others look at my account.

I think this is actually kind of useful. If you think of your Multiply message board as the central piece of Multiply, it's nice to keep what you've already read synchronized so you don't have to read it again... unless there's a new comment on a post you care about. I've also not seen another service that'll inform you, in an e-mail alert, that new comments have been added to the post since the alert was sent out.

But it's reasonable that you might not like this; if not, you can most likely set your e-mail client to not display external images in messages. Thus, Multiply won't know when you've read an e-mail alert. (Of course, you won't see images in the message, and your message board gets out of sync, so it's a tradeoff.)

As for the toolbar, a concerned individual would certainly be able to find tools that allow them to check out what apps on their computer are communicating. and to whom. Everyone's entitled to some paranoia, doing something about it just takes a little effort. :)

Have to find out, but I think it's useful.
So give it a try....

Great! Its about time.. I realised tat wenever i uploaded photos of a higher resolution it'd take hours to just upload. I hope this would be a lot better!!

Okay. Thanks for the reply and explanation. I have just been reading a lot lately about privacy issues and I am probably taking it to heart a little more than is necessary. There just seems to be so much going on anymore and I am trying to be a little more careful than I use to be. But thanks for the thoughtful reply.

One issue I've been running into occurs when beta testing. I don't care to elaborate on any specific OS, browsers, or bug reports. I'm not keen on the idea of being forced to use any Multiply compatible browser and/or OS and then having to perform what should be no-brainer site functions through a Multiply specific toolbar. Please keep the HTML uploader, but make it independently accessible in a prominent location. Thank you.

Active-x Uploader is the best among the others.

I never success with Tool Bar uploader, always error, example; if I uploaded 50 photos, and it would be 50 album/galleries with one photo in one gallery.

The status in the uploader said : "http error:0"

Yes Ria, I have the same problem with the tool bar uploader.

In my opinion, ActiveX Uploader is the best.

I'm using IE7.
