Blog EntryWe're awesome because we listen!Oct 15, '07 5:59 PM
for everyone
Good for many things.
Direct feedback is great...
It seems that in this super-hyper-awesome Web 2.0 world, just about anyone can stick a feedback link on the bottom of their site and say they care what their users think.

Here at Multiply, we care, so we have one of those too! Anyone can use the Contact Us link at the bottom of any page to send us feedback, ask for help... those kinds of things.

That said, we don't think that's quite enough.

The best place for feedback, discussion, etc.
But there's also MUDS...
We also have MUDS – the Multiply Users & Developers group, a place where (as the name suggests) Multiply users and Multiply developers discuss all sorts of things related to Multiply. And, of course, everyone is welcome! We think there's real value in encouraging people discuss these sorts of things in an open forum.

MUDS is not only the single best way to get an issue or idea in front of developers, but everyone at Multiply. However, that's only half of the story – in addition to us, you'll be involving an ever-growing, truly awesome bunch of your fellow users in the discussion!

Let's not forget...
While MUDS is good for many things, please note that it's not the place for...

While the MUDS crowd (both users and developers) is well-suited to address these sorts of issues, the groups linked above are even better places to discuss them. As we all know, keeping group discussion on-topic is a good thing. :-)

Listening is all well and good, but, well, it might be nice to do things, too.

Someone at Multiply named "Everett" posted a poll in the MUDS group way back at the end of February, asking users there what feature they thought should be added next.

The top choice was "Create recurring calendar events." Coincidentally, I'd been asking for that feature since August of 2005 - long before MUDS and all that even existed.

Since that time, what have we seen announced here in the Multiply blog?

- the Multiply screensaver
- a new look to the site
- friend-finding
- tweaks to video handling
- embedding of images
- message board customization
- badges (we don't need no stinking badgers!)
- hiding message board boxes
- improved "what you've missed"
- amazon wish-list integration
- guestbooks
- a new photo print partner
- tweaks to tags
- improved html editing
- mini-profiles in groups
- user link shortcut
- tagging people in photos
- enhancements to post-via-email
- iphone accessibility
- Multiply toolbar (it's verrah nice!)
- the promise of multimedia replies (aieeee)

Do you see recurring events in that list? No? Me neither. Do you see anything at all about the calendar in that list? No? Me neither.

This August, 2 years after I started inquiring about recurring events, and 6 months after recurring events "won" that poll in MUDS, I posted to MUDS pointing out that not only had features not been added, but the calendar still had a couple outright bugs in it. While the time-of-day bug was fixed quickly, the notification bug for which Pez said a fix existed but "would be a few days before it gets pushed to production" is still there, almost 2 months later.

So... thanks for listening, guys. But it seems you're adding an awful lot of new functionality that people haven't even asked for, while dragging your feet on improving (or even fixing) things that have been repeatedly pointed out.

I hurt someway in MUDS, but it is great. I also believe, despite the fact that most of the requests don't get any real action (from our points of view), MUDS by itself is a rare thing. You just imagine Microsoft had something similar :D
Thanks for your efforts.

Would the roughly 3,682 Usenet newsgroups in the microsoft.public hierarchy suffice? ;)

Things like "microsoft.public.access.activexcontrol" and "microsoft.public.dotnet.framework" and "microsoft.public.excel.newusers" ...

Not everything is web-based. (Though I bet Google Groups can conjure those up on the web for you...)

I asked for non-intrusive text-based advertisement, similar to Gmail, but that didn't happen. I keep seeing a bare belly in My Multiply board telling me about some weight-loss patch. That's seriously grating on me.

Dan, I don't think that's true at all. Some of those features came from requests. Regardless, you're right about the recurring events. It remains on the "to do" list, which you can imagine is very long with the number of requests that come in every day. And some of those features you mentioned were on the list a very long time themselves before they made it on the site.

Pleasing everyone isn't always easy but, as the post says, we do listen to all requests and add the good ideas to our list. Getting through the list can take time, but hopefully as we continue to add resources, we'll be able to do it faster.

Hem...still waiting : translation. Here in Indonesia, most users lack english basics, as a result they couldn't optimize multiply features well. I think some other non-english country will agree. If you need, I'll be the first to try translating this, kinda cool!

Hello, I am new :0)
I need help, I have composed a blog entry with a photo. But I want the photo to appear in the box on the home page under blog entrie. Do you know what I mean? I have pictures in my albums on my front page, but I would like to have the picture that I put on my blog I have composed showing as well in the blog section.
This is the link to my blog:

I have it listed as my handbag journal. There is where I would like to have a photo.
Thanks so much for your help in advance. :0)

I need help,
jackie, this would be a good question for the user support group or the new to multiply group.

also, by your user name i'd guess that you're hoping to use multiply to sell your designs. you might want to check out the terms of service to make sure you're within them. :-)
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 18, '07
i've always felt like you guys are pretty responsive, and though there's stuff i wish were added on faster, i understand that you guys have a better picture of where you're taking multiply and how things should be prioritized to get us all there than i do.

i think that as users, it's very easy for us to see multiply rather selfishly, what do *I* need to be added on next. but while i would want you to do one thing, and dan another, you all went and made multiply look cool on an iphone, which ended up getting some good press for multiply. and without good press, the kind that might pique an investor's interest (as well as the interest of possible new users), multiply may not last. (there are, after all, about a jillion and a half social networking sites online these days). if i had to choose between my new doo dad being added on and multiply's longevity, i'd go with the longevity every time.

so i'm all for you guys looking at the big picture and adding things on accordingly.

...

that said, with the new dough you're all rolling in these days, i'd love to see some of the little details that we've been mentioning get addressed. maybe you could hire a "little details" developer. ;-)

Perhaps I was being a little too facetious with my earlier remark but it seems to me that the ability to enter recurring events is already available to us (although it takes a few more clicks of the mouse), for up to four years. This outlives most of our operating systems, our widgets, and our interests.
I'm completely satisfied with the tools Multiply provides us, and happy to try out the new ones as they evolve.
Not being a programmer, it seems as though an added button or two to the existing drop down menu would suffice, and maybe saved to our own files instead of having to have an actual perpetual calender. as such?;

One thing I would LOVE to see is the ability to blog "old" posts. I'm moving my Y360 here and all the entries will have the actual date instead of the old date when the original post was written. Also If I forgot one and I want to keep the chronological sequence I have to delete the posts and write them again.

Anyway guys, I think you're doing a greater job than Yahoo. Please don't rush too much on things! That's how mistakes start happening.

barefootmeg wrote on Oct 22, '07
you can set the date of the post to something other than the day you make the transfer by using advanced posting. click on "settings" in the upper right corner, then selecting "posting options" in the right column. from there you can enable advanced posting which will allow you to set different dates. hope this helps!

what is the difference between a "blast" and a post on a guest book?
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 22, '07
to make a recipe post you select either blog or photos (if you want to do step by step photos of what you're making) and enter your recipe. then i would recommend making a "recipe" tag so that someone can look through all of your recipes at once if they want.
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 22, '07

if people are spamming you:

1) block them

multiply doesn't like spammers any more than you do.

Hi, I am a new blogger here, sort of testing the waters as I am unsure of what will happen at y360. I would like to be able to import my blogs from y360 to multiply since so many of my friends seem to be setting up here. Is there any chance of Multiply making that possible?
mistyshadows2u wrote on Oct 22, '07
barefootmeg...A blast can be a news bit, quote of the day, a hello, a link to a web site, an idea to share with your friends, a good night all or quick thought. It can be used to notify all your friends/contacts that you won’t be around for a few days or on holiday etc.
It is displayed at the very top of your page beside your name which can be updated or edited as often as you like. It can be seen by anyone or just your friends depending how you set it up. That would be your option. Basically it is like a quick comment.
Whenever your blast is updated it works on same principal as when you add a new blog
all your friends get notified. It is a fun feature. Also it has the option of a Reply if your friends want to comment back. To distinguish it …it can look like a cartoon yell, cartoon thought or a cartoon balloon.
A post on a guest book is just that which is basically further down the page and can only be seen by your contacts or friends. Hope this helps. I'm not to good on explaining.
tejasmidget wrote on Oct 22, '07
I can see why you may want one given the ease of editing it only, but, if you know how, your welcome message can work in much the same way, or you can drag your guest book to the top of your page, reset permissions, and rename it "blastt" or anything else you choose. A tag cloud at the top can be used similarly.
Poking around over there I didn't find a whole lot of blast users;
What's a blast? = http://tinyurl.com/ga5xe
Does everybody want them?= http://tinyurl.com/2g8o3s (I particularly got a laugh out of Snidely's answer, but thats just me :)
An example of a blast: http://tinyurl.com/2crlvk
All of which are available in Multiply, with just a tad of help from some of the user support groups.

you can move your guestbook around to be any where on your front page. you can also make it private (just for contacts, just for network) or you can make it public (for everyone).

but i see what you mean in terms of the blast being different. it sounds like an away message or a regularly changing "about me" line.

you could suggest it on muds (the multiply users and developers group). i don't know about the replying part, though. that really does sound more like a guestbook thing.
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 25, '07

i know that you can transfer your blogs using the tool mentioned here. but i'm not sure about pictures.

i would think that if you have the pictures showing in one window and a multiply drag and drop box in another, you might be able just to drag and drop them.
