Multiply users surely already know about our absolutely kick-ass privacy controls. In fact, we know a lot of users chose Multiply based on these – we read your comments!
In the near future, we're going to be implementing a feature that you're sure to love: the ability to set a default access level for all future posts you make.
This means that if you want to make sure you don't accidentally share content with an audience wider than you want, set a minimum access level... and forget it! Everything you post afterwards will automatically be posted with that default level.
We at Multiply actually use Multiply for sharing with our friends and family, so we understand as well as anyone that different types of posts require different levels of privacy. While, for example, you may choose to default to "My Network," there certainly may be times when you want, say, maximum exposure for your content ("Everyone") or the privacy of just your direct contacts. All the options are still there, and after setting a default, you can still choose a different one for each new post.
Once again, this feature is coming soon – for the time being, you'll need to manually set the access level on each post for additional privacy, as "Everyone" is the default setting.
how about the old posts made? when i set up the privacy, does that mean all the posts (including the old ones) will be changed, or does it just apply to new posts?
anyway, this is one great feature, i am looking forward to see!
WOW!!!!! I suggested something like this in the latter part of October after coming here and I am so impressed that you are listening to your users! Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. (Reason: I came here from Y360.....'nuf said). THANK-YOU, Multiply! This is great news for private users who don't want to accidentally forget to check 'contacts' only, but it doesn't interfere with those who want to be public either. AWESOME!!!!
THANK YOU THIS CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH FOR ME I WANT TO RESET MY PAGE NOW. WANTED IT OPEN SO ALL MY 360 CONTACTS COULD FIND ME. NOW I WANT IT CLOSED TO THE FEW I WANT IN...THE SOONER THE BETTER WASN'T LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING BACK AND RESET EVERY THING ONE AT A TIME,,,100 TO THE STAFF...NOW GIVE ME A BLAST AND LIFE WOULD BE WONDERFUL
i just want to ask a related question. let's say i have an old post set to friends then i made it public i dont see the post way up there on my message board but my friends see it as unread and they get confused. they think i posted something new when in fact i just changed the privacy settings and nothing else. does this mean that changing the access setting only is already an UPDATE of that post??? it wasn't like that before.
O I just love this one. It will be so much easier to have a private setting default and choose which ones I want to share with everybody than the other way around. I can't thank you enough for doing this. Bravo!!!
I believe, (so there's no misunderstanding of this feature) that regardless of what you set it at or how much you change this default setting, it will not change any posts already posted. That means this is not a global or mass privacy change tool for ALL posts already there. Only for the posts that come after the default setting that you set.
Jamie, when you change access to a post, sometimes you will see the tick box to tick or untick as to whether you want to post it to the message board also. So look for that next time.
Does this mean that each section of a page has the abillity to set a specific privacy-setting? Example: blogs are EVERYONE, vids are CONTACTS, pics are NETWORK etc.etc?

I suspect according to the screen shot above, that this would not be content specific, but more "global" (unless changes are made prior to the roll out)
this is great news! will there be anyway to differentiate my contacts-- i.e., friends, online buddies, family, etc, or do we still need to make groups?
While what masteradriannl1 said would be very handy, this is a great job! I know many 360 users (myself included) have been thinking about such a feature. My understanding is that this does not change settings of already written posts, then...? If that were possible, then if someone had a stalker and wanted to change all their settings, they wouldn't have to do it manually and screw up everyone's My Multiply page. This has happened to me on 360 and a sweeping feature that would make the entire blog, new and old entries, private, or for contacts only, would be a great spam-fighting tool.
supriess surpeiss not more change the quetion is is it for the better , isit go to be good to be or not for jsut what it is to be adn do we relay need it adnneed what of what
That sounds very nice! I myself will like that little added feature. Thank you for progressing. Now maybe we can get a blast? LMAO We do miss them. Some do not and some do I should say.
Since we are dealing with privacy issues, if we set a blog to EVERYONE (the public)....then are all comments on that blog public also? If we set a blog to anything less than EVERYONE...then are all the comments protected from public viewing? Would it be safe then to say that if we want to completely protect our privacy, then we had best not make ANY comments on ANY blogs since we never know when the writer of the blog may decide to set it to EVERYONE and then our comment would become public? I am not clear on the privacy of comments...and whether or not this new feature will affect the privacy of comments on blogs.

If MP could give us this "global or mass privacy change tool for ALL posts already there", now that would be very neat! =)
I had to come back and add that I appreciate "dantcer" and how she took my idea and came up with the default aspect. Her response was very quick when I first posted this idea and I just want to say KUDOS to "dantcer!" Thank-you, Multiply!

One cannot view comments without viewing the post on which they are left -- the access level of the post determines who can view it. So if your friend posts something for "everyone" and you comment, then anyone will indeed be able to view it. Or, yes, if they change the access level of a post later, any comments left change with it as well.

Changing the access setting of a post will only make it appear unread at the top of one's message board if the post is new to them, whether it's just been posted or the access has just been changed to include them.
So if you post something for your contacts and later change the access level to "network," someone in your network (who isn't your contact) will see it as new, as it is new to them. It won't pop back to the top for you, or for someone who had access to it before just because you changed the access.
That means this is not a global or mass privacy change tool for ALL posts already there. Only for the posts that come after the default setting that you set.
That's cool but I would rather have a color pallet on the side of the custom theme setting to give me better control over the content background in my blog. A tray with a few types of fonts would be a nice touch too.Nothing too fancy mind you, a 16bit color pallet and say 10 font styles would be just peachy. As most of my blog were imported from yahoo when I migrated, not all of the text content shows up well ( or at all in some cases ! ) depending on which preset color scheme I use. I can "tweak" things a lil bit with the codes already shown but it would be nice to have an easier way.
I've posted feedback to yahoo quite a few times, plus left comments on their blog, that they needed to implement this type of security setting for our blogs, but true to yahoo form, they ignored the suggestion. So I very much appreciate that Multiply is doing this!
I think there is one security level missing, though. I wish there was a way that we could filter it so that online buddies are treated differently from friends. Right now, they're just words, they don't mean anything else. There are some information that I only want friends and family to know, not online buddies.
Business contacts can be filtered, why not inline buddies?

i have a different inquiry/feedback/suggestion. and it's about guestbooks. would it be ok to have a quick link to guestbooks? or does that defeat the purpose of guestbooks and me going to my friend's website to see the stuff on his page? in my experience, the guestbook has become a place to chat and leave casual comments to my friends, the kind that i don't need to send by private messaging.
This is nice, but lately I've noticed that days after I've deleted blog entries that have not been viewed yet, they are being listed as viewed when I check the page that shows all of your site views.
Also, some of my posts don't seem to be visible to my contacts on the message board, and sometimes the first day they are posted they randomly disappear and re-appear on my message board.

You'll still need to edit each post one by one to change current access. As mentioned in the announcement, this new feature will only affect new posts going forward.
I appreciate greatly the privacy settings that allow users to customize their own groups and contacts. If the access can extend to the frequent mail list version, it would be so much greater too. Keep the hard up, multiply folks! Love to see that :)
Another great thing to add is the ONE thing that YAHELL 360 did right....just because they are your contacts, doesn't mean those contacts SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!!!! sorry...a little frustration there but come on....we want them to contact us on multiply, thru messenges....why the effe does EMAIL have to be visible too....maybe in the near future guys? Come on....if it was you....and you could choose, would you want everyone and their mother's to have your email? Hell no. We should be able to set PERSONAL email to JUST THAT...personal aka private....Thanks. :)
I had a visitor to my page yesterday, whose photo icon is objectionable to me. I put the id on on "block," but her photo still showed up on my "Recent Visitors" section at the bottom of my home page... ugh. Today, I see that despite being blocked, she was back and viewing my home page and profile, and her photo id is moved up to the most recent visitor position again. How and why is that?? Help!
Regarding my previous post, I really don't want to be a censor to anyone other than on my own personal pages. We all have different preferences and values, and I do value others' right to "free speech," so to speak, even in the form of a photograph. I would like an option, however, to delete that one page viewer's photo icon without having to turn off the whole viewing history function (if I could find my way to turn it back off). If a blocked viewer sees only a blank home page, how do they then get to your profile page, as well? Do the option links still show up on the home page, and they link to another blank page???
Celestial, let me make a suggestion quickly... When going to your viewing history, use table view and not the view that shows the headshots. As suggested above .. report them and they will be gone quickly if it's against the Terms.
If you use table view temporarily, that headshot will be gone quickly from the history you will be checking. Then you can revert back.
If they are showing directly on your homepage, it only takes.. four or five people to visit your site to knock them off.
(I just went) That's one. lol
You may see people showing in a viewing history (your profile for example) that are TRYING to see it. If they aren't in your permissions, they won't see a thing. So the viewing history shows you where they landed or tried to, not what they actually saw.
sounds good but I still would like to have it so my email doesn't show on the pages. that was one feature about yahoo and myspace I liked better than here.. You don't HAVE to share your email addy with your contacts. To me that is exceptionally personal
Love it!! Sure wish we could have a feature to bring up and view our blogs in a LARGE grouping.. and check mark.. everything we'd like to mark a tad differently than we did when we originally posted. When one is NEW.. they may not have noticed the option to mark them more private.. as they were so intent on transferring blogs! lol. (oooooooooops!)
It's great to see that you really listen to your users. The expression in your post "absolutely kick-ass" makes me feel like you're not just a robot pawn. Thanks for giving us a place with a purpose.
I second that. I would also like a filter that would allow me to separate my friends from my online buddies. It would be interesting to have a "watcher" filter as well, since I've found some band sites and artists sites on Multiply.
Also, would it be possible to have the option of changing/editing a post for "post to message board"? For example, I notice that once I make a post "for the message board", sometimes accidentally, I cannot take it back.
After reading your article. It came to mind that the ablity to allow CLOSE NETWORK contacts to see posts woould also be of GREAT value to peope like me. That would give us the option to allow contacts & thier direct contacts to see my posts, but not friends of a friend's friend (etc)
The two settings you are going to make available are wonderful...but I hope you would seriously consider making this third option availabe to us. Some of us don't mind sharing with people we know...and maybe even THEIR frinds...but we kinda draw the line at total strangers when it comes to some things!
since your website already ROCKS! It wouldn't be such a stretch to make it "Just That Much Better!"
still voicing my idea about the email option.... I think it is essential we be allowed to keep it private if we want to not everyone we have on our contact list are we going to want to have access to our emails. Nor should we have to create a new email just to come here. just my personal opinion. it makes it much easier for someone to stalk you.... esp if you part ways under bad terms
Hey guys, I am loving my multiply blog, but how about getting rid of those adds that look like they are directed at pedophiles?? See my blog. It just creeps me out. Otherwise things are great here.
I do hope you will also show you have been listening to us on the Online Buddy issue, which has been mentioned again and again.
And I want to add my vote to the request made here regarding privacy of our email addresses. If any Contact is automatically allowed to see my email address, this obviously makes me wary of adding people on as Contacts. This also ties in with the Online Buddy issue - if we could make the email address available only to Friends and not to Online Buddies, I'm sure we would all feel much safer about adding people on as Online Buddies.
