As some of your may have already noticed, yesterday we added a small feature that's sure to make your lives a little easier.
While you're probably already aware that your homepage's sidebar displays your online status (and if you're offline, it'll show when you were last logged in), we made this information a little easier to find by making it available in an additional location.
This information is now part of users' mini-profiles as well, so it's possible to see another Multiply user's online status by clicking their headshot, whether on your Contacts page (for users who are your contacts, naturally), or next to a reply that any user has left to a particular post.
I agree with the 1st 3 comments. I'm not speaking on behalf of everybody else, of course. I mean, there are some people who are ok with this feature but there are also some others who are not. I belong to the latter crowd.
I've been hiding my online status on my home page's sidebar with a CSS code and it's been working like magic. Before this one came out, people had to go to my page if they want to know my online status.
Now they can see it from their own sites?
I went to the contacts part of my site and click the widest network I have which is 'distant networks'. Hundreds of people are on that list. I chose one person and I could see her online!!! She is not even on my friends list!!!!
I think we should be given an option whether we want it to be displayed on the mini profiles or not.
Everyone's trying to hide their status! Check the Multiply.Design group and the old Modify Multiply group. Countless requests for hiding it! Now they have to do more work to try overriding this code...
I too use the hide online status CSS Code and for a reason.... Our online status should be our choice, as with all our other options as to what content on our pages is visible to what contacts. It certainly isnt my choice for those not on my contacts list to know when I am online or when I last logged in as is now visible to anyone who reads any post I leave on any page...
There's nothing weak about those of us who do not want our online status showing. It's simply not the business of others whether we're online or not.
I've said this before and I'll say it again...just because we are online does NOT mean we are tooling around MP. I have other business I take care of the Internet.
If one more of my contacts makes a comment to me about my online status, they will be deleted and blocked.
We should have been consulted before this went into effect. I'd like to know who thought this was a good idea to implement.
"Today we're looking at a feature that's been available since day one: Multiply's extensive privacy options. You know, the ability to share what you want, with precisely whom you want.
While we've looked at this a few times in the past on this very blog, we think it's worth revisiting, particularly as more people join Multiply. We understand that newer members who've used other services to share their content may not be used to having such powerful ways of sharing while controlling their experience."
Whilst there are people who will love this feature there are those that don't... so could we please have that "You know, the ability to share what you want, with precisely whom you want." giving us all the ability to "control our experience"...
And thank you so much for giving my ex husband yet another way to monitor my movements...there are MANY reasons why some of us prefer to hide our online status and they don't all amount to being harrassed online..
I do not like the feature. Sometimes, I come on to strictly work on a blog and do not have time to visit others. It looks as though i am ignoring them. This is not the truth as I come back to visit at a different time, but it does causse confusion. I would like to be able to control this feature more
I agree totally with ajarumlily , there are reasons I like my site secure, and a lot of them are for the same reasons I left Yahoo 360 for. Like stalkers and idiots that find you anyway on multiply but you have at least allowed us control as to who can view our pages. We need the OPTION, free to choose to use it or not but at least give us FREEDOM OF THAT CHOICE!!!!!!!!!
They are blocked but as with Yahoo 360 all it takes is a new ID and once again you are being stalked as it is right now I have 10 blocked...where there is a will there is a way and there are loopholes and if they are smart enough they get through them.

MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO ME BUT I DO THINK THAT THE USERS THAT DO NOT WANT IT SHOULD HAVE A WAY TO REMOVE IT.
We have the Choice to limit our posts to certain contacts, we have the Choice to post comments... what we now dont have is the Choice to extend that privacy to ourselves. This is equivalent to having Caller ID removed from your phone, or to not have the ability to screen calls via answering maching or voicemail... as drastic as that might sound to some it is a valid comparison.
I AGREE WITH THE REST: CAN SOMEBODY PROVIDE A CSS CODE FOR THIS FIASCO? I don't like it, my contacts don't like it, and even Mike Abundo wouldn't like this news as well. It's a breach on privacy in its worst degree. PUT@NG IN@ NYO.
Yes it would be good to be able to use stealth settings otherwise we'll have mssgs going everywhere and confusion & mayhem especially if there is an important or emegency conversation going on !!Petenix
Ok just for future reference I'm online 24/7 never sleep never log off either that's for all the stalkers and harassers ..I know it already you don't need to make jokes about it or spread rumours I am on 24/7 So now you know, no need to look at the headshot I'm online all the time [end sarcasm]
Thanks Multiply great idea guys but honestly we need to be able to control it * Do you want to show as online ? Yes or No In the options please
I know myself I may be on but not always here contrary to popular belief I do have a real life and even though I am logged in I ain't actually sat here!
I agree with the others, I would prefer the option to hide my status. I stay signed in most of the time even when I am not in front of the computer. It would be a handy tool and make our experience here improved if we had an option.
I love the status there. I only want the option to set permissions. Me only, Contacts only, etc. (Both on homepage and in the miniprofile.)
Profile/Edit would be a good place to add this permissions perhaps.
I would like to be able to easily change the permissions when I wish to. This would accomplish that. :)
The status is okay, I agree, but yes, can you give us an option to hide our online/offline status? And it's not because we're "weak," it's more of respect, and frankly, a number of us don't really care if a contact or a user is online or not.
Wow. I suppose I shouldn't be, but I'm dumbfounded that people are that presumptuous/rude/encroaching/egotistical. After all, if they see your name, it's in the groups where they should be checking for answers/posting their questions anyway.
Can you please tell why you removed a feature in multiply...the downloading vids and music feature. I thought this is a blogging site that allows you to share. I was wondering why you removed them. I cannot even search for music anymore why???????????????
So it seems people have strong opinions on this...lol! I am just wicked...I love knowing who's on, but dont want anyone to know if I am or not...hehehe. So which ever, six in one... half dozen the other.
oh plzzz....What a stupid question to ask.....it IS a big deal to know whether you are on line or not! real time communication is important so we can get immediate feedback! ):-@
Personally, I am one of those people who very happily found the CSS code to hide online status on the side rail. Even so, I understand why some people would want to know the online status of friends for real time chat, but most people want privacy, at least from people other than close friends. Others stay logged on even as they get up from the computer to do other things.
There have been suggestions made months ago on MUDS, good suggestions with which everyone who commented were in agreement, yet they have not yet been implemented. This suggestion was made only days ago, and many of the comments voiced concern over privacy issues and control over who can view this information. When developing this feature, these concerns should have been taken into consideration before releasing it. Even on IM I can choose to be visible to select contacts. For a social networking site that is so concerned about privacy controls, I don't understand why the choice whether or not to reveal online status was not included.
I agree no biggie I stay logged in to all my accounts (dsl) only time I leave is if browser shuts down or if I need to reboot.. SO in reality it is a lie I am online.
sorry for the double post but the above is only available on your profile not theirs... ^_^ i will not say im disagree to this (this is one cool feature thanks Multiply) but I guess its more cooler when you can hide your online status (from the 1st 3 replies) (btw why hide when your online? lol i can't see any connection to privacy or anything) just kiddin ignore this line ^_^

Who cares if they can see you online? Does it really matter? What are they going to do, PM you?
Personally, I don't see it as a really big deal -- I do, though, wish there was a way to hide it.
I feel the same way. I mean what can a person do to you if they see you're online. If they pm you, or whatever, ignore it and delete if you don't want a message. I'm not upset with it, but it would be nice to have a choice for the ones who don't want to be seen.
I have no problem other than the people on my page is the only people who should be able to see if I am on line.. others should have to send me a message or post to see.. My friends know what going on with me and know when and what time I will be on.. other "stalker" types or lurking people .. it just gives them ammo to bug you. Setting for friends .. in categories.. and then the ability to widen the circle as you want or turn it off.. we have that on Im's and email programs.. so how hard is it to put it here.. I came over from another website and liked the ability to pick who could see what a lot better than on the other site... see what you can do.. please.. it would be a big plus to the site.
Can you please tell why you removed a feature in multiply...the downloading vids and music feature. I thought this is a blogging site that allows you to share. I was wondering why you removed them. I cannot even search for music anymore why???????????????
Oh yeah, I'll add this one: What's the use of the slogan Share Your Life With Your Friends if the exception was DL of music? Kissing the backsides of the capitalists (in this case, RIAA and EMI/Capitol) just to prevent this site from being shut down? Heck, they don't have the guts to stand up for us users, unlike Digg.com, which I admire them after defying MPAA over decryption issues.
You're not alone, Margaux. I'm just one of the "inconvenienced" users like you do, frustrated over this time and time again. And I don't want my music to be handled by a underrated music service provider like Mercora. Got the point, Multiply Team? ばか!!!!
What's the use of the slogan Share Your Life With Your Friends if the exception was DL of music? Kissing the backsides of the capitalists (in this case, RIAA and EMI/Capitol) just to prevent this site from being shut down?
Actually, the exception isn't just Music. You'll also notice that there's no download functionality for Links or Blog entries. Oh, or Photos. Let's not forget Calendar items. Hrm... wait, Reviews too?
Seriously?! Now that I realize this, I am outraged that my ability to share content of these types is being restricted as well!
I don't see the point of worrying about your online status showing because as soon as you make a comment on someones blog (or even your own) the action shows in the inbox of your entire network.
They are blocked but as with Yahoo 360 all it takes is a new ID and once again you are being stalked as it is right now I have 10 blocked...where there is a will there is a way and there are loopholes and if they are smart enough they get through them.
They'll still stalk you when you aren't online. I hate to burst your bubble.
Can you please tell why you removed a feature in multiply...the downloading vids and music feature. I thought this is a blogging site that allows you to share. I was wondering why you removed them. I cannot even search for music anymore why???????????????
Maybe because it's ILLEGAL!!! We crossed this bridge a month ago!
Seriously?! Now that I realize this, I am outraged that my ability to share content of these types is being restricted as well!
When did they take this away?!?
The SECOND AMENDMENT of the CONSTITUTION lets me download music wherever I want and if YOU are going to violate MAGNA CARTA and remove that RIGHT, then I'm going to POUT IN THE CORNER!
I too would like to hide my online status and the last login information. Flat out, there are some things that should be kept private, like our location and such. I don't want everyone to know where I am from.
I love the new feature, excellent job, makes it much easier to catch up with friends on here without having to needlessly go to their site when they're offline. Great work guys and dolls!!!
I never much worried about it.. I have looked just to see if the person has been around or is around.. not that I do anything with that info.. other than maybe store it in my head... and actually .. just because the page is up.. doesnt mean that person is actually active on the page.. it could be minimized or just one of the many tabs that they may have up. Or at least it very well could be for me.. I am notorious for bringing up a page.. then getting sidetracked.. walk away from my computer to come back and the page still be there. So really.. it might be accurate info.. it might not be...
"Can you please tell why you removed a feature in multiply...the downloading vids and music feature. I thought this is a blogging site that allows you to share. I was wondering why you removed them. I cannot even search for music anymore why?" Yeah, so true. I like the idea to be seen online or off... TKS, Multiply.
