Blog EntrySome thoughts on Posting via E-mailApr 10, '08 9:37 PM
for everyone
One thing that became apparent while looking over the results of our recent photo survey is that a clear majority of respondents were interested in more options for getting their photos onto Multiply.

We're looking into the feasibility of upload plugins for specific applications, but in the meantime, we wanted to remind you of an option available right now that you may find useful: Posting Via E-mail!
A brief aside: as you probably already know, it's been possible to post content to Multiply via e-mail since 2006. To do so, simply select a secret PIN and choose a default access level on the settings page. Then, you can post content, like photos, by attaching it to an e-mail sent to secretpinhere@your-user-ID.multiply.com.

See the FAQ for all the details on Posting via E-mail.

But consider this: you can use Posting via E-mail to send content directly to Multiply... in ways you may not have realized!

Let's say you're on a Windows computer (as shown in the screenshot); you can easily select a bunch of images, right click them... and post them directly to Multiply using your default e-mail client. (If you don't use Windows, your operating system may make this just as easy to do. Why not try it out?) Also, if your mobile phone can send e-mail, you'll be able to post via e-mail from wherever you happen to be.

Are there any other applications you use that have built-in e-mail support? Have you tried posting to Multiply from within them?

I posted a blog via email as an experiment, but haven't done so since.
Depending upon what the future holds and the situation, I might use it more, but for now, I like doing it right from my site itself. But posting via email is a great option for some.

Hmmm. I never thought of it that way. =) Might try it. :p I sometimes post via email, I think it's a useful feature. ^_^

Thanks for the tip! ^^,

I can't really see the point in posting via e-mail, if I'm online I may just as well post directly from my PC where I have the possibility of reducing the size and naming the photo's according to my wishes.

Good luck recovering your password any other way in case you happen to lose or forget it one day. Understand the feature now? ;)

As a user I suggest setting to "Draft".
http://multiply.com/setup/post-via-email

Probably need to put this @ MUDS but here goes...
Please check the RSS feeds to make sure that emailed posts in Draft form aren't sent through until Published.

Thank you,
Radine!

I don't post from email but I did suggest to someone in Indonesia that is blocked right now that they try it. Though they can get here via proxy, they are limited in what they can do. (Possibly the connection speed). They can get here but...Posting a blog (not sure what is) is one of those things they cannot do. It starts to load up (the blog window) but then it's just a white box. So I suggested they try to post via email. I'd be interested to know if this would be a viable work around for someone from Indonesia that is currently having those problems (until this govt issue there is resolved). If this works, this could make their online experience here still viable. (Especially if they can get here otherwise and posting is just the issue).

Well in catching up on google this AM, it appears this block has been lifted. (For now). Still, would be nice to know if this is an option when something like this happens. (An option that will work) Seems like it would.

In my case I just changed the email address assigned to my account to another one I set up exclusively for Multiply. Editing your profile should have a provision for changing email addresses.

I've tried posting via email in the past. The problem I encountered is that when I compose my email in html format (my email client is Thunderbird), instead of plain text, the post is screwed up on the site and I still have to edit it to make it readable ... which kind of makes posting via email one step too many. Hopefully, that has already been addressed. I will attempt again in a few days.

I do post through email from work occasionally, but I'd like more control over who can see my posts via the email - often I post stuff to my blog but I don't want it to show up on my message board (some people might find that strange, but there are things which I want to get off my chest but I don't want to ram down other people's throats). It would be nice if that could be set as a default feature.
heatherbells wrote on Apr 11
Posting by email is great if Multiply is blocked by your work. I post blogs (in plain text) as a draft then when I get home I do all the faffy formatting and picture linking I need. I'm unlikely to post pictures by email, but I can see it being useful for people with photo phones. I'll have a go though, I like the look of that right click business, picking up several photos, and emailing them at one go.
pkailasa wrote on Apr 11

You can configure it in Post via E-Mail Settings.
heatherbells wrote on Apr 11
Moomin, if you post as a draft, you can then set the privacy settings how you like later. I sometimes do the same thing, it's one thing making a post available for people to seek out if they're on your site, it's quite another shoving it in their inboxes.

It's nice just posting straight from the toolbar, signing into my email seems to be just a bunch of extra steps, but maybe someday I will get more inventive and try that multiple photos to multiply. Thanks for the tips and keeping us informed.

I haven't tried using this yet, but thanks to these tips I might try it, now that I've learned about setting it to Draft as default and also the idea about right-clicking a whole load of photos and choosing Send To - excellent idea and I'm sure I wouldn't have thought of that without this post. Many thanks!

You don't have any idea the power of posting via email. I always use that great features in posting anything to my MP. I post it as a DRAFT, edit and share it to networks whenever I want. not today perhaps tomorrow or event next month. No one knows I've actually posted something untill I shared it. beside another benefit of posting via email is you always have backup files in your email, files of your blog content in case something happaned to your account. Not to mention, you can share your email posting along both to MP and carbon copy (CC) or BCC to mailing list groups in yahoo or gmail for instance. Isn't great ?

hi honey, It's open now for some ISP. Once Indonesia's goverment has temporary blocked multiply along with other sites, but it's just for a couple days or so, and not for all ISPs, some internet provider in Indonesia didn't block MP. Once I've thought exactly what you've suggested to you friends in Indonesia which was posting via Email. and I did ! and whalaa.... It's work ! I posted celendar event with title : Indonesia included multiply.com as temporary blocking site not as a DRAFT. Since as you mentioned, It starts to load up (the blog window) but then it's just a white box, it's happened to me as well. I could not through MP that day but my post made it. That the advantage of posting via email.
fairyirish06 wrote on Apr 12
Ok, so what are you telling me???? I guess you talked in circles, and I got so confused I lost the point. Should I NOT post from other sites? Is it ok? If it's not ok, why does 'Multiply' have it's name listed as a 'posting' site? Just asking. Can somebody give me a clear answer?

Thx, Fairyirish06

I just tried posting via e-mail. I e-mailed a photo, which posted itself as a blog. We have photo albums for our photos. There is no way to direct content via e-mail to, say, photo albums, let alone a specific photo album.

Another thing.... if this facility has been around since 2006, why does it say it is still in Beta?

Please contact customer service about this. It is possible that something has changed on Alltel's part.

I've just tried it this morning - my only concern with this is the access setting. I chose the setting for 'contacts' only and ended up being posted for 'everybody' (luckily I set it as draft). What have I done wrong? Or should I contact the CS too about this? I used 2 different emails to send the message and both have the same result...

I've just tried posting by email for the first time and I'm really impressed by how well it works. It kept all my font settings - I tried different sizes, colours, even a different typeface, and that all worked fine. And I was pleased to see that I got an email confirmation that my blog had been published, with the link so I could easily go and see it. Brilliant! I might just start using this! As someone pointed out here, it also means having some kind of backup of our posts. Well done Multiply, I'm most impressed!

Is there a way when we post photos to disable the right click feature or the drag and drop from the browser to the desktop? There are java scripts that will let you do that for personal websites. It would be nice to have here.

I use this feature a lot, the problem is that the secretpin is not enough for a secure posting. I had one case where someone was able to find my securepin and was able to post spam to my multiply. Since then I changed the setting so everything is a draft, which forces me to got to the page and publish it. It would be nice to have aditional security features, like accepting email only from a specific email address besides the secretpin. Any thoughts?

I find it easier just to copy and paste. As linktojill said I had some emails with pics that I wanted to blog, so they ended up in the photo section instead.
