Blog EntryFlash video: Better than soupJul 17, '06 3:54 PM
for everyone
Some types of soup are just yummier than others. For instance, having lunch at the office the other day, a few co-workers and I began discussing the merits of various Chinese soups -- 75% of those present gave egg-drop the thumbs-up. And for good reason: it's awesome.

But there's one type of soup that isn't quite as tasty. I like to call it codec soup.

According to Wikipedia a codec is

a device or program capable of performing encoding and decoding on a digital data stream or signal. The word "codec" is a portmanteau of any of the following: 'Compressor-Decompressor', 'Coder-Decoder', or 'Compression/Decompression algorithm'.

Got all that?

In short, there are dozens, if not hundreds of formats (such as AVI, MPEG, Quicktime and WMV) for encoding video. And if you've ever tried playing a video file and found it entirely didn't work, (or only played its audio track without any visuals... does that sound familiar?), there's a good chance you were missing the codec necessary to decode that particular video format.

If only there were a video format ubiquitous enough to reach nearly everybody on the Internet...

Hey! According to Adobe, Flash is installed in nearly 98% of web browsers, making it a very attractive format for getting video content to people -- and getting them to work without headaches.

That sounds pretty ubiquitous to me. So that's what we're doing. Starting soon, when you upload a video to Multiply, we'll automatically convert it to Flash Video (FLV) format, playable on any computer with Flash 7 or higher installed. It'll even play right in your web browser -- no need to worry about external media playing programs.

We're going to be able to convert most of the popular video formats to Flash, but if we haven't gotten around to your favorite format, just let us know; in the meantime, unsupported formats will still work as they always have -- click the thumbnail, download the video and play it in your program of choice. And as for your existing videos, each will only be converted to Flash the next time they're played, though they'll still be available for download in their original formats.

Video on Multiply: No hassle, no mess. No headaches.
No soup (required) for you.

I don't like the sounds of this. I choose the codec to upload because that's what I want people to download (in my case DivX). I use Multiply as a way to share these with my family so that they can download the file that I've uploaded. I hope you guys don't make me have to find another place to store my video for people!

At the very least, I hope you give us a choice whether we want the original file stored for people to download if we so choose.

It''ll be great to have it playable in Flash format on the browser in Multiply, yet at the same time still let us download the original video. That's what I've been wanting. Yay!

very convenient...indeed!
israelsae wrote on Jul 18, '06
I agree with jamtown -we should have a choice
cleandroviana wrote on Jul 18, '06
I usually like to convert the video first before I upload. I hope you guys keep the option to keep in the original format.
debater4christ wrote on Jul 18, '06
Convenient for playing, not for downloading.

For those of you concerned about having the originals, they WILL be available.

Flash is fine by me. The less complicated is better for the not too animated savy folks... Like me. I admit.

I like flash bcos i dont have to download the movie to watch it. Saves my disc space and downloading time.

I just hope that there is no file size limit for uploading the video. Cos so far the largest mb allowed i've seen (to be converted that is) is only 150mb. I hope for more.

I like the speed but the sound scratches.

FLV is fine, but the automatic compression is too low and pixelates the video considerable. Any chance of giving us upload/playback quality choices, or to automatically use a smoother compression?

I second this! Please give us a choice of formats. Not only is the video timing off and pixelated, but mine are cutting short too.
